The Trans-Pecos region of Texas is a “hidden gem in the rough” when it comes to hunting opportunities, species available, and the memories made while in the Big Bend area. The hunting opportunities offer many unique and challenging experiences for outdoor enthusiasts. The rugged terrain, diverse wildlife, and breathtaking landscapes create an ideal setting for those seeking adventure and connection with nature. This region is home to a variety of game, including Mule deer, Javelina, and the elusive Aoudad sheep, making it a prime destination for both seasoned hunters and newcomers alike. Conservation efforts in the area ensure that sustainable hunting practices are maintained, preserving the natural beauty and ecological balance of this remarkable part of Texas.

The variety of species in this part of Texas allows for an array of calendar options when planning your next hunting excursion. Here are some of the species found in the area and their season dates or ideal hunting times.

Aoudad Sheep

Aoudad Sheep are exotic game animals so you can hunt these animals year-round. We recommend hunting this species in September, October, and November as this is when the Aoudad are in rut and you can expect to see many large numbers of sheep.

Mule Deer

Mule Deer has a regulated season so if you are planning to chase Mule deer on a property that is not under MLDP, the archery season runs from the last weekend in September till the first weekend in November. If hunting during general season, those season dates run from the Saturday after Thanksgiving for about 15 days. If you are hunting on a ranch that is under MLDP, or Managed Lands Deer Permit, then you get the option to hunt from archery season till last Saturday in January which allows you to potentially hunt during the Mule deer rut.

Elk are a very sought after exotic animal in west Texas especially during their “rut” which usually takes place around September 15th-October 15th, give or take. You can also hunt these animals in December and January when bulls frequent feeding areas to replenish from the rut.

Dove & Blue Quail are both fantastic hunting experiences and taste great as Dove or Quail poppers! Dove season typically runs from the first of September to the end of October and then starts up again from mid-December till mid-January. For Blue Quail, their season starts at the end of October and runs till the end of February.

Scimitar Oryx, Wild Hogs, & other Exotics are available year-round in the area on both large high fenced places as well as on low fence ranches. We recommend hunting these “bonus” critters in cooler months to ensure their hides are in best condition as well as minimizing the risk of ruining the meat in the hot desert sun. Scimitar Oryx and Gemsbok Oryx in particular make for an exciting safari style hunt and they also make for great table fare!

As you plan your hunting trip to the Trans-Pecos and Big Bend area, it is essential to respect the land and wildlife by adhering to local regulations and guidelines. Engaging with local guides and outfitters can enhance your experience, providing valuable insights and ensuring a successful and responsible hunt. Whether you are seeking the thrill of pursuing an elusive game or simply enjoying the serene beauty of the west Texas wilderness, this region promises unforgettable adventures and cherished memories.
